Joe Stephenson

Texas Tradition

Dickens County named for J. Dickens who died at the Alamo lies above The Caprock on the High Plains of West Texas.

It’s home to the Pitchfork Ranch and a small town called McAdoo. Nearby there was maybe still is a farmhouse where Nathan and Jewel Stephenson, fiddle and piano played the old tunes.(Read more)

I met Joe in Plainview, Texas one night when played a country dance with our friend Lynn Daniel.  I had just begun to play fiddle at the time and on our home back to Lubbock Joe told his story of growing up and how he learned to play.

“My first memory had been to hear the clunk of piano pedals from where Mom kept me in bassinet as she backed up Dad. Later on when I was just a kid Dad would have me clamp my teeth onto the fiddle scroll while he played the old tunes into my head.”

And that’s not all. The Stephenson’s farmed outside McAdoo but took fiddle very seriously. So Nathan, a third generation fiddler gave Joe a choice.
“You can practice or plow.”

I hesitate to brag on the accomplishments that followed.  I’ll let his music speak for itself.  What’s important is the gift he received from God and can share with others.

Colorado Cowboys for Jesus

Joe Stephenson

The Colorado Cowboys For Jesus were born 34 years ago when Vern Thomson became a member of the Flying W Wranglers, at the World Famous Flying W Ranch in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Vern was a believer and was privileged to work at the Flying W and tell a secular audience of God’s Love. Joe Stephenson, a fellow believer joined him 19 years ago and the two have been praising God, playing & singing together ever since.

In addition to entertaining millions at the Flying W Ranch. Their performances highlight traditional Gospel songs sung in
a true western style with lots of hand clappin’ fun and the Good News that Jesus Christ lives.(Read more)

Vern and Joe answered God’s call on their lives 5 years ago and went into full time Ministry, leaving the Flying W Ranch. The Flying W has always been a wonderful family oriented business, owned by Christians, but the cowboy friends felt they needed to be more deeply involved in ministry and become more useable for the Kingdom of God. They have been blessed as they’ve studied God’s Word and travelled coast to coast & around the world praising their Lord & Savior Jesus Christ. They’ve worked with Compassion International, Moody Bible Network, Andrew Wommack Ministries, Focus on The Family, the Christian & Missionary Alliance, the Alliance Defense Fund, Life Network, the Navigators, Glen Eyrie, & many local Churches and ministries across the country.

The Colorado Cowboys for Jesus have helped plant four successful Cowboy Churches in Colorado. Joe and Vern are serving as Co-Pastors of “Colorado Cowboys For Jesus Cowboy Church” in Colorado Springs. “Cowboy Church” is held each Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday mornings at 10:30 a.m. at Colorado Cowboys for Jesus Church, 11 North 22nd, Colorado Springs, CO. For directions please see our web site www.coloradocowboysforjesus.com.

The “Colorado Cowboys For Jesus” still travel and do family oriented Cowboy and Gospel Music Shows with lots of good natured cowboy humor when time allows.

The “Colorado Cowboys For Jesus” share the wonderful story of God’s Amazing Grace. The message is a love story of what Jesus has already done for you. He will change your life, if you’ll only let Him. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
